KSU-XGG 2007 NASA Fellows Science Bowl

The Brothers of Chi Gamma Gamma, under the direction of Brother Army Lester of Kennesaw State University, co-hosted their biannual Science and Math Bowl competition. Over 50 Cobb County area elementary and middle school students came together on April 15th, 2007 on the campus of Kennesaw State. The event was the second competition hosted this year in conjunction with the NASA Fellows (science majors) of Kennesaw State.

To prep for the competition, the elementary and middle school students attended a series of hands-on training sessions on campus. Students also received sample questions and answers for various science and math scenarios in preparation for the bowl questions. The overall goal of this event is to provide a fun event for students to learn science and math. The students competed in a traditional quiz bowl format. Teams consisting of five students each were matched against each other and buzzed in at random after a question was read. Winning teams were determined by the total number of rounds won after several rounds of competition. First, second, and third place winners were established and prizes were awarded accordingly. Competing students came from schools that included Argyle Elementary, Fair Oaks Elementary, East Cobb Middle, and Palmer Middle schools.

Argyle Elementary stand out as one of the highlights of the competition. With this being their first competition, Argyle took second and third place in the elementary division. Coached by Brother Vernon Vereen, the team showed great promise in being next year’s champions. The students from the all male Argyle team left excited and already starting to work on strategies for next year.

The NASA Math and Science Bowl competition, which is funded by the Chi Gamma Gamma Foundation and the KSU Georgia Space Grant Award, was created to introduce more students to the joys of learning science and mathematics in a fun and exciting way. The main objective of the Science Bowl is to help middle, and elementary school students develop more effective science and math problem solving skills. It is our hope that these students might consider career options in science and technology.

The Brothers of Chi Gamma Gamma, working in collaboration with local educators, are planning the expand the outreach efforts to include a Science Bowl Competition, a Science Fair Competition and a Summer Science Camp for the surrounding metropolitan elementary and middle schools. The proposed elementary and middle school activities will offer an opportunity for more students to learn science and math in fun and exciting ways.

We are proud of our Brother Army Lester, Ph.D. (Department of Biology and Physics in the College of Math and Science) who continues to direct the program.
