Argyle Elementary CAReer Day 2007

Even in today’s fast paced world, the men of the Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. continue to dedicate their time to give back to tomorrow’s leaders, today’s youth! While negative images of Blacks in America fill our TV screens and print media, these men have adopted an ‘all-boys’ class of fifth graders at Argyle elementary in Smyrna to teach “lifestyle transition skills” and to provide mentoring and positive role models. On a weekly basis, three Omega men visit the class to provide additional support for the teacher. The ‘Three Omegas’ have exposed the boys to tie-tying skills; taken them to lunch at an area restaurant to teach dining and behavior skills; sponsored them in a science bowl competition for elementary students at Kennesaw State University; sponsored guest speakers during class to expose the boys to more positive role models – a nuclear engineer, a patent holding chemist, military officers and various business owners.

On March 27, the Omegas sponsored a CAReer Day where 35 Black men, Omega men and friends of Omega, brought their cars, ranging from classics to pick-up trucks and a ‘starter car’ belonging to a college student. The CAReer day event was held in the Argyle school parking lot. The fifth grade boys were first to interview each man to find out about jobs and careers and what kind of lifestyle an education can allow you to achieve. After the boys completed their assignments of gathering information from each man who came, the other fifth grade classes had an opportunity to interact with each man and ask questions. The day was an outstanding success. The students learned about many new careers and about the importance of doing well in school. The teachers and administrators praised the men for taking time out to share their experiences with the students at Argyle. Plans are already underway to expand CAReer Day to another local school where the men of Omega are currently engaged in mentoring and classroom reading.

The 2007 school year will end with the fifth grade class going on a field trip to Birmingham, AL to visit the Civil Rights Museum and other area attractions. The cost for the trip is covered by a grant from the Chi Gamma Gamma Foundation. Through this Foundation, the men of Omega Psi Phi’s local chapter have annually provided scholarships to deserving local high school students.
